A Russian military jet flew within five feet of a U.S. Navy EP-3 Aries II surveillance plane while passing through international airspace over the Black Sea on Monday, according to Department of Defense officials.

The U.S. plane was forced to end its mission ahead of schedule due to the interference, CNN reported.

The incident is just the latest in a string of these types of close calls that Russia seems to be intentionally carrying out in recent years.

Russia has enhanced its military presence in the region following its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Last month, two U.S. F-22s intercepted Russian attack jets shortly after flying over a de-confliction line in Syria.
