Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said he thinks President Trump would be open to working with Democrats.

"I think the Democrats are crazy to not try and deal with him directly," Hatch said, according to the Washington Post.

"Seven years ago, he was a Democrat. It doesn't take any brains to realize that he'd be open," he added.

Trump has worked across the aisle in the past, cutting a deal with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling in September. He also met with Democrats last month to discuss a possible deal regarding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Hatch's comments come as Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Patty Murray, D-Wash, are working to get Trump's and congressional Republicans' support for a bipartisan plan to stabilize Obamacare.
