Sen. Tim Kaine accused President Trump on Friday of being "jealous" of former President Obama's accomplishments, and said that's why Trump withdrew from the Paris climate agreement.

"Why did Trump really walk away from #ParisAgreement? He's surrounded by science deniers and fossil fuel junkies," the Virginia Democrat said in a series of tweets Friday. "POTUS jealous of Obama accomplishments. But in the end, American innovative spirit is stronger than his insecurities."

"U.S. private sector, researchers, cities, towns and states will lead clean energy revolution despite lack of leadership from WH & President," Kaine continued.

Trump said Thursday the U.S. would exit the Paris climate agreement during a speech in the Rose Garden. Obama entered into the accord last year.

Kaine, who ran for vice president alongside Hillary Clinton last year, pressed the Trump administration to remain in the Paris Agreement and introduced a resolution last month urging Trump "not to turn over America's international leadership role on climate change and clean energy to China."
