Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee had some rare praise for fellow Texas lawmaker Sen. Ted Cruz on Tuesday for standing with her during a rally in their state for school choice.

"I'm glad Senator Cruz was there to stand alongside the issue of excellence in education," Jackson Lee, a Democrat, told MSNBC.

Cruz, a Republican, called school choice "the civil rights issue of the 21st century" at the Jan. 25 rally.

Jackson Lee told MSNBC she and Cruz still had differences over the issue, however, noting that she did not support vouchers, but rather the theme of "excellence in education" during the rally.

She explained that the multiple school options "puts pressure" on people who are involved with education to make sure that students are supported.

"I was excited to see all of the children, all of the schools and public charters and public schools all there," she said.
