A majority of Americans now believe President Obama is less competent than former President Bill Clinton, according to a Fox News poll released this week.

But here's the really surprising statistic: A plurality of respondents in the same poll also think that Obama is less competent than former President George W. Bush.

The survey, which was conducted by the Democratic firm Anderson Robbins Research and the Republican firm Shaw & Company Research, found that approximately 68 percent of respondents believe that Clinton had a better idea of how to handle the White House than Obama.

Meanwhile, 48 percent of survey respondents said George W. Bush was more a competent president than Obama, while 42 percent of respondents said precisely the opposite.

Further, 7 percent of respondents said that they think Bush and Obama are about the same in terms of competence.

The Fox News poll, which was conducted via telephone from June 1-3, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points:

Separately, a poll released this week by CNN shows that Obama’s approval rating in 12 separate categories, which range from his handling of the economy to foreign policy, falls below 50 percent.

The only area where the president polled decently is in environmental policy, registering at about 49 percent, according to the poll conducted via phone from May 29 through June 1.

The sampling error in the CNN poll of 1,003 adult Americans is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Here’s how the president performed in a few of the categories:

Economy – 38 percent approve, 61 percent disapprove

Health care – 36 percent approve, 63 percent disapprove

Foreign affairs – 40 percent approve, 57 percent disapprove

Helping the middle class – 40 percent approve, 58 percent disapprove

The situation in Veterans Affairs hospitals and medical facilities – 37 percent approve, 58 percent disapprove

The situation in Ukraine – 38 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove
