Jim Williams » It’s no way to treat the King

On New Year’s Day George Michael was at his office at NBC on Nebraska Avenue cleaning out tapes. The King is leaving NBC4 after a 28-year run without any regrets or without animosity toward the station.

NBC4 recently announced that it was ceasing production on ‘The Redskins Report’, ‘Full Court Press’ and the Monday night Redskins segments with George and Sonny Jurgensen that have been the only reason that some (myself included) watch local sports on TV.

“’The Redskins Report’, with John Riggins, Michael Wilbon and Jurgensen have consistently been among the highest rated shows in Washington for years. But the station does not want to pay the talent and production costs so we are going off the air,” said Michael.

So does this mean that we won’t see the King on TV anymore?

“We are in no rush right now,” Michael said. “I want to continue and I think that we can find a home for the shows but our partner has to be committed to the quality that we expect in production and support the show.”

Executives at both MASN and CSN have had conversations in the past with Michael when he resigned as Sports Director at NBC4. I have confirmed that both are very interested in talking to him about his programs, though no conversation has taken place, yet. Also, don’t rule out Dan Snyder’s Redskins TV & radio.

TV has changed since George Michael started at NBC4. Recently I had a general manager at local station tell me, “Why should I pay a big-time talent to do a two minute live shot from downtown when my audience is mostly women who could are less. Plus sports fans have ESPN, CSN and all sports radio to find out what is going on they really don’t wait around for the 6 or 11 p.m. news to find a score.”

George Michael is the best local sportscaster in the country, he is an icon and someone who, with his Sports Machine Show, gave SportsCenter the blue print on how to do sports news shows. Now, budget cuts have kicked him to the curb for good.

Let’s hope that the King finds a new kingdom soon — we sure do miss him on the air!

If George is the so called king we do not have much in the Washington area for sports people. lets move on and get a sports person who does no cussing on Tv and is not a HOMER. In other words if the Deadskins stink. Lets just say THE REDSKINS STINK AND BE DONE WITH IT and they will stay that way as long as King Snyder has control of them

George needs to go away already. There's been 500 "he's the greatest ever and we'll miss him " pieces done on him, and he keeps coming back. He's living on reputation and is another one of Snyder's puppets.

George the best? Maybe in DC, but that was only by default. Watching him nightly made it crystal clear he had a lack of sports knowledge and was guaranteed to mis-pronounce at least three names in each sportscast.

Jim you hit the nail on the head. I worked with George for many years, He had a vision of the way TV should be done, with quality and passion. THE GEORGE MICHAEL SPORTS MACHINE was the template for ESPN and others when it went on the air in sept 1984. trust me you will see the "king" on TV or Radio again. Bp

As a former employee and intern for George Michael, I want to say that is the best sportscaster ever in this town and he will be sorely missed because the local sports now is dull and boring and uninteresting. I guarantee George will be back on the air again because he enjoys what he does and is a real icon. Good luck, George.

Never underestimate George Michael, few have the passion and drive, when he started local sports he raised the bar beyond any expectations, he invested his own money in technology to allow more highlights, more coverage, more stories. George transcended sports, he was an entertainer and therefore everyone could watch, he never limited viewers to sports - Pardon the interuption, but isn't that ESPN show a complete rip off of Full Court Press? A man will eventually be judged by his legacy and I along with many other alumni of the Sports Machine are a testiment to the man whose ambition to do your best and provide the best product to the viewer will live on the air for a very long time...and the King will be back, no doubt.

As another who got his start with George, I am confident he will be back doing it his way, the right way, very soon. - Coach
