GW looking to bounce back after dismal season
Nearly a week after the official start of college basketball practices, George Washington had its own version of “Madness” on Thursday with “Colonials Invasion.” The fresh start is welcome in Foggy Bottom, where the Colonials are anxious to put last season’s dismal 9-17 campaign — their first year without postseason basketball since 1974 — behind them.
“I really have that sense with that group, just by the way the chemistry’s coming together. We struggled with the chemistry last year,“ said Colonials head coach Karl Hobbs, who enters the year without Maureece Rice, Cheyenne Moore and Miles Beatty, who each have graduated or were dismissed from the team. Rice did both.
“This year, you can see it,” said Hobbs. “They’re really enjoying being around one another, and they’re doing a great job just trying to please. We don’t have issues with roles and attitudes and things like that. We dealt with that all last year, and that was really discouraging.”
Redshirt sophomore guard Travis King returned to the court last month after missing all of last year with a fractured patella. He is expected be ready in some capacity for GW’s season opener.
