Comcast SportsNet has a news operation that is aired completely in HD, refined their Redskins coverage while improving live game coverage of the Caps, Wizards and D.C. United, while also being able to cover the area’s major golf event — the AT&T National hosted by Tiger Woods. All of that success has been spurred by Rebecca Schulte, who joined the network as senior vice president and general manager in March 2007.

But that is just the tip of the iceberg for Schulte and her talented team. Some of the more recent changes include a new 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.

“We have the 10 p.m. show that, most nights, will be coming out of either our Caps Post Game Live, or our Wizards Post Game Live or both,” Schulte said.

“We wanted fans to have a fast paced show that covered what they had just watched on the network as well as get the viewers updated on what else is going on in the region.”

Sandwiched between the two broadcasts is Redskins Nation, which airs at 10:30 p.m. before heading back to the 11 p.m. newscast, which gives the crew a full half-hour block for a comprehensive report. But they’re not quite finished there.

SportsRise airs at 1:30 a.m. and they replay it as SportsDay from 6-9 a.m. and also do a midday show from 11 a.m. to noon.

“That allows us a chance, for fans who may have missed something the night before, to catch up on anything they may have missed.”

On night with multiple teams playing, getting to view all of these shows have been hectic in the past for viewers on CSN+. But Schulte’s made some changes there, too.

“Yes our goal there was when we have shows on both networks we will air the game, the post game shows and then the newscasts,” Schulte said. “That way, the viewers will not have to tune back to another channel to get the sports news. We think it will make watching the games much easier.”

Schulte has also had to deal with rivalry from MASN, which covers the Orioles and the Nationals. However, she looks at that from the positive side.

“We have great respect for what they do and they have the same respect for us. ... We have a healthy rivalry and that is good for the viewers.”

Schulte credits her success at CSN to her team of reporters, producers and talent. In this writer’s mind, the CSN team makes this one of the best regional cable networks in the country.

Only Comcast's studio material is in true high def. Their in-field material is shot in 16x9, identical to the set up WUSA has. Odd how you seldom write on other station's sports efforts. WUSA and WTTG have Sunday shows. All the affiliates also do features during their 5pm newscasts. Some of them are pretty good.
