George Mason defeats East Carolina 77-71

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Louis Birdsong and Andre Cornelius scored 19 points apiece to lead George Mason to a 77-71 victory over East Carolina on Saturday.

The Patriots (3-1) made four free throws in the last 14 seconds to hold off the Pirates (3-1), who were led by Sam Hinnant with 27 points.

East Carolina held a 39-38 lead at halftime, but George Mason opened the second half with an 8-2 run. The Patriots built a seven-point lead on Dre Smith’s jumper with 12:34 left in the game, but East Carolina tied the score at 66 with 4:18 remaining.

The Patriots scored six unanswered points, then Jontae Sherrod made a 3-pointer and Darrius Morrow made a jumper to pull within two points at 73-71. Darryl Monroe and John Vaughan each hit two free throws to seal the win for George Mason.

Chad Wynn added 11 points for the Pirates.

Auburn beats George Washington 83-71

Auburn, Ala. — Tay Waller had 19 points and Frankie Sullivan added 17 to Auburn overcome 15-point deficit to beat George Washington 83-71 on Saturday.

Trailing 44-29 at the half, the Tigers (2-1) outscored the Colonials 25-9 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, as Waller’s 3-pointer put Auburn ahead since a 20-17 lead in the first half.

The Tigers led 64-62 with just under 5 minutes to play and 14 of their last 19 points came from the foul line. The Tigers made 14 of 17 attempts down the stretch and were 27 of 36 for the game.
Damian Hollis scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half for George Washington (2-1).

Waller also had five steals, four rebounds and three assists for the Tigers. Lucas Hargrove scored 13 points and Korvotney Barber added 11.

St. John’s tops Howard 79-44, Kennedy scores 17

NEW YORK — D.J. Kennedy scored 17 points to lead St. John’s to a 79-44 win over Howard on Saturday.

Paris Horne had 15 points for the Red Storm (3-1), who led 42-18 at halftime. Justin Burrell had 14 points and Kennedy added 13 rebounds.

Kyle Riley, the lone player in double figures for the Bison (1-3), had 11 points.

Kennedy made three 3-pointers during the Storm’s early 15-0 run, helping them to a 19-3 lead in the first half.

St. John’s, which built a 57-27 advantage with 13:19 left, finished with 46-percent shooting from the field. The Bison shot 33 percent.

The Red Storm played without senior swingman Anthony Mason Jr., who will miss the rest of the season because of a torn tendon in his right foot.

Mason, who averaged 18 points, was hurt earlier in the week.

American tops Jacksonville 75-67

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Garrison Carr scored 24 points to lead American to a 75-67 victory over Jacksonville on Saturday night.

The Eagles (3-1) jumped out to a 10-1 lead over the Dolphins, who failed to score a field goal in the first eight minutes of the game.

Jacksonville (0-3), coming off a heartbreaking 71-62 loss to No. 22 Georgetown, cut the lead to seven midway through the second half but could get no closer. American shot 15 of 21 from the floor in the second half and made 5 of 7 shots from behind the arc.

Brian Gilmore added 18 points for the Eagles and Derrick Mercer chipped in with 10.

Ben Smith led Jacksonville with 18 points. Despite shooting 3 of 12 from the floor, he made 12 of 14 shots from the free throw line. Aric Brooks added 11 points off the bench for Jacksonville.
