Rick Snider » Hey Baltimore, it’s not a rivalry if it’s one-sided

Examiner columnist Rick Snider says former Redskins cornerback Pat Fischer would make Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis cry if Fischer were playing today. (Getty Images & AP file)
A Redskins-Ravens rivalry? Charm City wishes.

The Redskins head to Baltimore on Sunday night. Baltimore fans love playing Washington in anything. It gives the crab-eaters a chance to work off their capital envy.

Having worked and lived in both markets, I know Baltimoreans hate Washingtonians. Our northern neighbors see Washington as all things evil. A place where the federal government taxes them unfairly, a city of transients who rotate with every presidential inauguration. A town of terrible traffic and worse seafood.

Whatever, bay seasoning breaths.

Baltimoreans love to trot out “Jack Kent Cooke tried to keep the Ravens from coming to Baltimore.” Oh please, like Peter Angelos didn’t try to block baseball from Washington before cutting a one-sided TV deal with the league to hurt the Nationals for years to come. I’d say we’re even there. And by the way, Cooke didn’t block Baltimore from stealing Cleveland’s team.

What really sticks in Baltimorean’s crab claws is Washingtonians don’t hate them back. In fact, Washingtonians don’t dislike Baltimore at all. Ask a few people on the street about the neighboring city and they’ll talk about the Inner Harbor, crabs and cheaper housing.

Oh, there’s nothing like unrequited hatred. Just ask Maryland fans when snobby Duke students cheer “Not our rival” during basketball games. I love the Terps’ response — “we’re your daddy.”

Redskins players don’t care about the Dallas rivalry, much less a team they rarely play. Redskins Park is on the far side of Washington so players don’t come across Ravens fans at the gas station or supermarket. They’re in deep Redskins country. Maybe if the training facility was in the Maryland suburbs, like the stadium, it would be different.

Of course, you’ll hear Ravens fans claim their stadium is nicer. Redskins fans counter that it should be — since taxpayers funded it. Cooke paid for FedEx Field himself. He did monopolize local concrete contracts when the two stadiums were being built concurrently to drive up Baltimore’s costs by $20 million, but that was business, not personal.

To be fair, M&T Bank Stadium is prettier. That’s not saying much, given FedEx is merely a giant ATM that will one day be demolished when the Redskins return to the RFK Stadium site in 2020 or so.

Baltimoreans claim a better history — Johnny U. and Artie Donovan and the greatest championship game ever. All I know is there are three — two more than Baltimore — Super Bowl trophies at Redskins Park plus a couple more titles from the old days. Plus, Baltimore has no one who could touch Sammy Baugh and Pat Fischer would have made Ray Lewis cry.

The Ravens will probably win this time. Baltimore is improving while Washington is declining. It would have been different in September.

Baltimoreans will feel better about themselves. So what — Washingtonians still live in the capital of the free world while Baltimore isn’t even a state capital.

Rivalry? You gotta be kidding.

Baltimore: 2 Super Bowls 2 NFL Championships Better fans. Better stadium. Better tailgate. Nice home record at Fed Ex Washington - what are you about .500 there? We'll take our best home record in the NFL this past decade. Also, did anyone really care about getting a baseball team in Washington? Judging from attendance and the number of people who still root for the O's, I'd say no. You can't argue that Baltimore deserved and wanted a football team far more than DC wanted a baseball team. No one in Baltimore EVER rooted for the skins!

You are right Rick, there is no rivalry. There has to be competition for a rivalry to exist and the Ravens OWN the Redskins.

Well said Rick! One Super Bowl for the Ravens. Nice city, nice people and most of their fans are for the most part passionate but polite. Only the old school people hate DC.

Rick, you are a fool. Nice research for your column there. Note: Baltimore has TWO Super Bowl wins, not one. Nice work moron. Super Bowl 5: Baltimore 16 Dallas 13 Super Bowl 35: Baltimore 34 NYGiants 7

Okay. Let me ask a simple question for the Ravens fans out there. Who were you pulling for before 1996?

Pat Fischer would wet his pants at the mere sight of Ray Lewis or Mike Curtis coming at him.

The comment on here prove his point. You have an inferiority complex. BTW, he said Trophies sitting in the respective cities. Baltimores first is in Indy. It left in the middle of a snowy night in 83. As for Baseball. The Nats attendance is what is should be for a team that stinks. Win and people come, lose and people won't. Why did Baltimore deserve a football team. After 1979 Baltimore's fan support wayned. Look at the last years attendance. Further, being 2-1 against a team in the regular season is hardly owning. And please don't ever say your fans are better. First, this is your opinion, second its laughable. What does people in Baltimore rooting for the Skins have to do with the article? Nothing? I am glad you didn't root for the Skins. Judging by the attendance at the O's games, not as many people as you thought rooted for the O's. I know I sure didn't. Have a nice day.

Way to go Rick. You've got their inferiority complexes all swollen now. Also, I love Old Bay.

Pat Fischer was probably pound for pound the Toughest Sob ever to play. Mike Curtis was their as well. In fact both were in THE SAME NFLFilms special. The comment about Lewis was to say that Fischer's Toughness makes Ray lewis look like a choir boy. The same could be said about Curtis. The Baltimore inferiority Complex lives on.

I think that is the most snobbish comment that could have been made by a professional writer. They would make Ray Lewis cry. You have lost your mind!!!!!

Alright, Rick, final tiebreaker: your crime rate vs. our crime rate. Loser gets Peter Angelos.

We have more than two SB's cause we are the older Browns. Then, it was the NFL champs title of which is the same as the newer SB title.

Dec 5, 2008

You are correct there is no rivalry. Been to FedEx and been to M&T for games, and I would give M&T the higher mark. However rat fans are terrible. They are obnoxious, nasty, beligerant and have low football knowledge. Their idea of a home game is drinking, starting fights, rayray dancing and harrassing any opposing fan yet claim they travel so well to other stadiums (yeah Right) They support their team as long as they are .500 or better otherwise in come the Mayflower trucks. Their fans and their players are nothing but Thugs

Baltimore: Three Legitimate NFL Titles (All of which were won by the team based in Indianapolis.) and one Illegitimate Championship that was stolen from the city of Cleveland. Hey, B'more Fans; don't even try to claim The Browns' 4 AAFC and 4 NFL Titles (You know, the ones that Pittsburgh & Cincy fans claim do not exist.) because the Browns History stayed in Cleveland. B'more fans are also among the world's biggest hypocrites since they praise Art Modell and comdemn Robert Irsay for commiting the same act.

The idiots in Crackamore will never get Modell in the hall of fame, thank God for God Fearing Americans like Tony Grossi who is keeping Modell out of Canton. Modell never left his history or colors behind, it was a lawsuit settlement between the City of Cleveland and the NFL that allowed that Weasel to move that forced him to do so. Modell is so sleazy he once said he wanted Hitler to coach the Ravens if he were available. The only football title that belongs to Baltimore is that USFL title, the CFL Grey Cup title belongs to that team based in Montreal.

Jeep-erCreeper

Dec 6, 2008

ACTUALLY RavenNutz NO you don't have anything that is associated with the Browns history. The people and city of Cleveland sued to retain everything about the team so when a new team appeared it would simply be like the Browns never left. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul

POSTED Dec 5, 2008 Jimmy: "...BTW, he said Trophies sitting in the respective cities. Baltimores first is in Indy." Wrong, genius. Baltimore's first Lombardi trophy is sitting right where it belongs in the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards...in Baltimore, not Indianapolis. Try again.

I've worked in Washington for over ten years and I've never actually met a "Washingtonian". Come on, Rick...you and I both know that "Washingtonians" are fictitious entities, like pixies and unicorns. However, I have met plenty of Redskins fan in my day and trust me, the hatred of the Ravens and all things Baltimore runs extremely deep in the vast majority. Rivalry one-sided? I laughed when I read that title. I guess that's why you work for a free circular like The DC Examiner, Rick, and not for a reputable news organization.

Kat

Dec 6, 2008

Baltimore fans, you DO only have one Superbowl trophy. Why? Because unlike Cleveland, you took it from the league for 12 years. You do NOT own your previous history. You only own a team that you hypocritically stole from a great sports town. And your uniforms are purple. How very...unmanly.

ravenmaniac

Dec 7, 2008

Sounds to me like there IS a rivalry. "washingtonians still live in the capital of the free worlds while Balt isn't even a state capital"? Who cares? And that means what to you? Higher taxes? Please. Ravens will roll tonight. Enjoy it, cry baby! your daddy, R

ravenmaniac

Dec 7, 2008

When the Ravens made their run in 2000, Redskin fans were buying Raven's stuff and calling it a "regional" team. THATS how passionate SKins fans are.

MOBTOWN RULES

BOO-YAA! Hail to the Ravens! Hail Victory!

Birds of Prey

Dec 8, 2008

Let's see, 3 Super Bowl trophies for the Skins -- one legit, two during strike years -- not legit. Dead Kent Cooke built his stadium, but Maryland contributed about many millions for infrastructure around "McStadium". And this is the reason Dead Kent Cooke didn't oppose the move from Cleveland. Love all this Cleveland stuff. Didn't the Skins hail from Boston?

RFL

Dec 8, 2008

The title for this article is obviously misleading...but who really cares if one city thinks there is a rivalry and the other doesn't? Talk about football, guy... For example: The overall record EVER between a professional football team from Baltimore and a team from Washington is: Baltimore 18, Washington 8 done. Baltimore = superior football town.
