Rick Snider » Is Zorn’s job in jeopardy?

By: Rick Snider

Examiner columnist Rick Snider writes that sources say Redskins coach Jim Zorn's job hinges on how the team finishes the season. (Win McNamee/Getty Images)
Redskins coach Jim Zorn may be vying for his job over the final three games.

Sports talk callers aren’t the only ones wondering whether the Redskins might have Bill Cowher on speed dial for 2009. Redskins Park sources are also pondering if the team’s 1-4 collapse to practically ruin its once sure playoff chances could also claim the coach.

“The honeymoon is definitely over,” said one team insider of Redskins owner Dan Snyder and Zorn.

Zorn was a late choice in February after at least six candidates were considered following Joe Gibbs’ sudden retirement. The Redskins were caught embarrassingly unaware of Gibbs’ intention despite several indications following Sean Taylor’s death six weeks earlier. Zorn was given a modest contract by NFL standards as insiders questioned whether Washington was awaiting Cowher’s possible return in 2009. Indeed, Cowher recently told The Washington Times that Snyder tried to lure him from retirement before hiring Zorn despite the owner’s earlier denial.

Snyder may be readying a season-ending option should the team collapse. Team insiders say losing to Baltimore, 24-10, on Sunday especially rankled the owner, who doesn’t like falling to a regional foe. While Snyder will surely dismiss any report of changing coaches, he did the same in October 2001 over Marty Schottenheimer, who was later fired after finishing 8-8 in his only season.

With an offense that scored 10 points or less during four recent losses, both injured tackles now sidelined and the running back and top receiver clearly limited by injuries, the Redskins (7-6) are clearly reeling when they play at Cincinnati (1-11-1) on Sunday before finishing against Philadelphia (7-5-1) and San Francisco (5-8).

Zorn yesterday conceded he has to rally the roster for a 3-0 finish for the playoffs. That’s exactly what Gibbs did best, but asking a first-year head coach to replicate a Hall of Famer’s specialty is daunting. Zorn may be channeling Napoleon Bonaparte’s “A leader is a dealer in hope,” but players are quietly watching whether Zorn can lead in a crisis.

“I’m not going to try to create some major psychology and trick anybody. ... I don’t look as our football team groping for answers from its head coach,” Zorn said. “We have to hold our team from getting so frustrated they pack it in. I don’t see this as a team in any situation has that sense of pack it in.”

Zorn had a winning formula - running the ball and a 6-2 record - and decided to shift gears and look what happened. on top of it, he benches their best player for the dumbest reason i've ever heard. that alone should get him fired.

What a load of BS. Zorn isn't going anywhere. A whole lot of speculation built on nothing more than one ambiguous statement from one unnamed source.

The old saying is true; "You win in the trenches". Without the injuries the O line was middle of the road. With the injuries they are not close to NFL caliber. Quality and depth is a player personnel problem ... last time I looked Zorn didn't make those decisions.

I hope this is a rumor. Cause if Snyder fires Zorn after a year then our team is truly screwed. The lack of an O-Line and D-Line rest on the shoulders of Mgmt. Not Zorn.

Garbage, A team insider from Dan Synder. I heard from a SOURCE at DC Examnier that Rick Snider is battle for his job and he needs a story of a lifetime to keep it. I'll keep ya posted!.

Injuries to both offensive, defensive lines take the toll on all NFL teams, result from injuries reflect team record, my suggestion to the Redskins activate younger players, let them play more during the game to get playing experience, our player roster is full of young talent warming the bench getting paid millions, which coach is responsible for getting young talent ready for the NFL, It's easy to blame coach Zorn!

Snyder should fire himself and his puppet Vinny before he does anything else. As long as Snyder is running this team he will never EVER win a Super Bowl because he is a piece of garbage. This team is beset by injuries and not that good to begin with.

Look it doesn't make sense to talk about a head coach's failures after two thirds of his first season for every other team in the NFL. This is a Redskins team whose owner has tried everything to make the team successful. Even though Gibbs proved to be past his time, you have to give Snyder credit for making that move and then sticking with him even though it was obvious the team was not going ot be very successful. Snyder's hiring of Zorn, if it plays out to be a stop gap, to get Cowher would be genius in that he saved money, face, and gave a young upstart a chance. Zorn's offense is way too predictable and bland for the NFC East. The defenses are just too good. Even though I agree Zorn is way over his head, I think that he might be successful in a smaller market team.

I don't care what anyone says about the O and D line. The last 4 weeks the skins have looked lathargic, stale, and like a practice team. There is no flow on offense and no consistency. That is the coaches job to make sure the offense executes properly and defense is relentless. I would have no problem if the skins fired Zorn, I think he was a poor decision in the first place and did whatever to lure Cowher! They have very little chance at making the playoffs now, who are they kidding!

You take a meaningless 5-word quote from an anonymous "insider" and extrapolate that to Zorn fighting to keep his job? Huh? Wow, desperate for a headline with some teeth, eh? You should be writing for tabloids.... oh wait, you are! My bad.

There is no doubt that we need an O Line and a D Line, it goes without saying. You need to score points to win a football game. You can always count on Portis to rush for 100+. I question Zorn's play calling. You have to be able to pass the ball considering that every team thinks we only have a run game. A run game that has been stopped in the last 5 games. The Seattle win was too close. That team stinks. We beat the same Giants team last year. What the heck!

Dec 9, 2008

REGARDLESS OF THE OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES, ITS THE PLAY CALLING THAT MAKES NO SENSE. WE PROBABLY HAVE HAVE THE LOWEST PASSING % DOWN FIELD IN THE NFL. THE SCREENS SUCK ON 3RD AND LONG. CAMPBELL DOES NOT SCRAMBLE EITHER.

How do we get someone to "fire" Dan Snyder. He is the real problem: success or failure starts at the TOP!!!!!!

GhostHawk

Dec 9, 2008

Being the fact Im from Seattle, I hope Snyder fires him..I want Zorn back here in Seattle next season as the O cord for Mora...

Dec 9, 2008

If anyone should be fired is Greg Blanche, despite injuries the skins defense has the talent to be successful, his blitz packages and cover sceems are sub par. As far as Zorn, it will be his lack of flexibility or lack of confidence in the offense that will lead to his departure, Defenses have caught up to his play calling already and he really needs to understand the rules and game management concepts better

25 sec.on the clock and you down by 2 TD's and you are still throwing the ball. and with no oline. he needs to go back to the west coast.

So he wouldn't be fired for the fan's sake; he wouldn't be fired for the player's sake; he would be fired because the owner has personal pet peeve about losing to Baltimore. That would be mature leadership!

Unless Cowher coming to DC Zorn isn't going anywhere. Zorn do need help, like a WR coach and or a O-Line coach that can develope young players.

Dan Snyder is just not a good or lucky sports owner. After nine or ten years you see the same thing from his teams. Choke, inconsistent, all the above. They still need a mobile quarterback, a big receiver, pass rusher and a smart offensive and creative coordinator.

I think that zorn should be given another shot next year to coach this team, but I think that he should man up to his mistakes and not take everything as being "medium". He should give up play calling to a qualified person and fire sherman smith (what has he done).

'Com on man!

Dec 9, 2008

Zorn isn't going anywhere, & Cowher has said repeatedly that he is NOT coming back to coaching anytime soon. Not even for the $10 mill Snyder is supposedly promising. What need to happen is the our Redskins just need to gel! Campbell needs to play in 1 offense scheme and get used to it. Turner, Schotty, Spurrier, Gibbs & Zorn. How much turnover can there be. Leave them alone. It will all work out.

Seattle wants Jim Zorn back real bad. We realize we made a huge mistake by not making him our next head coach. If he gets let go look for us to take him right away no matter what the cost. Jim Zorn is worth it. He will be an amazing coach in the years to come!!!

Lets see: the Browns play the Ravens and Crenell benches Anderson and the Browns are in turmoil; the Eagles play the Ravens and Reid benches McNabb - and the Eagles are in turmoil; - the Redskins play the Ravens and Zorn benches Portis and the Ravens are in turmoil. Gee - I wonder what's the problem here!

Zorn is playing with an inherited offensive personnel built for smash mouth football and not the west coast offense. The line is old, we have no receivers and our running back is beat up. This is definitely a personnel issue and not a coaching issue. Give Zorn some time to build a team around the type of offense he wants and then we'll see what happens. If we fire Zorn, then I am officially finding a new team to root for. The fans should rise up and hit Snyder where it hurts most...his wallet...by not buying any tickets. That's the only way to get him to sell the team.

This was originally speculated Monday on skinsbowl.com. The place for the first insight into the worst team in sports. 75-82 since the Great Danny took over. this will be the 3rd year in 5 they finish in last in the nfc east. every year after they make the playoffs and play legitimate teams, they lose. This team is not close to competing at the higher levels. They have sub par talent, and alot of overpaid players. Cooley 11 Mil for 0 TD's? Campbell 8.3 million for 12 TDs(and 3 picks to get him). Jason Taylor 8 mil for 22 tackles and 1 sack. on i can go. slice this team up and see what they are really about. LOSING. Eagles, Giants and Cowboys should hope Zorn doesn't get fired. He is in so over his head it is not funny. Read more about the truth about the Redskins at skinsbowl.com

I wonder if this guy "Snider" thinks that the buttkicking that the Ravens put on Zorn, therefore ending their season, benching their RB, infuriating their owner, embarrassing them on national TV, and perhaps leading to the firing of their coach adds to the "Rivalry" that he says does not exist?? Good prediction there "Snider". Well done.

Everybody calm down. The main problem with the team is a lack of depth on o-line and d-line. Also, jason taylor needs to be switched to right end instead of left end. This team was never expected to even have this record, but everyone got caught into the hype of winning at dallas and philly those two weeks in a row. One more year in the offense and hopefully Malcolm Kelly will be that big WR we lack in the offense.

Look at the teams that hold onto their coaches and build a team. Look at the organizations (notice I didn't say teams) that constantly trade personnel and fire coaches. They are always in a state of flux, always average, always changing systems, never getting anywhere. The Redskins are one of those organizations. The article mentions Cowher. How long did he coach Pittsburgh? Rooney stayed with him through good and bad times and along the way they won a superbowl. In that same period, how many coaches have the Redskins had?

You can't make a steak dinner out of a dead crow. Zorn is trying to use a west coast offense with a NFC east coast team. We just don't have the right personnel. Unfortunately, the other teams have figured out how to defend against the Zorn offense. In addition, the o-line and defence guys are injured or ready to retire. Maybe replacing Zorn is not the answer, but some folks need to go. Perhaps we could start with a few in the front office.

Why not hire Bill Cowher as HD Coach and keep Zorn as assistant HD Coach and let Zorn learn form Bill? After two or three years at most, Cowher will no doubt retire for good and then there will be a well trained and learned Coach ready to take over a well balanced and disciplined team. Just my thoughts.

Please..Cerrato should go!!!!!!!!!!!! What was Joe Gibbs record in his first year back on his 2nd term? Which coach has one the title in his 1st coaching year? Give Zorn a break, he maybe a little bit too candid , but he did bring early success with the team. The team is old on both lines, dang even Portis made an issue of it during the start of the season.
