D.C. tops Harrisburg in Open Cup

D.C. United took another step in the defense of its 2008 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title, holding off United Soccer Leagues second division-leading Harrisburg, 2-1, in front of 2,137 at Maryland SoccerPlex.

Boyzzz Khumalo gave United an early lead in the tournament quarterfinal, nodding home an easy cross from Devon McTavish in the eighth minute, and Andrew Jacobson headed in Fred's corner kick ten minutes later to double the advantage.

Down a man, the City Islanders pulled within one on Nicki Paterson's deflected shot in the 64th minute, and David Schofield would've tied the score in the 73rd but his shot hit the crossbar.

Harrisburg captain Mo Oduor was ejected in the 50th minute after a hard tackle on United midfielder John DiRaimondo.

The United victory did come at a cost, as midfielder Brandon Barklage went down with a right knee injury midway through the first half. Barklage was to be evaluated further on Thursday.

The D.C. victory set up a July 21 semifinal at SoccerPlex against USL first division side Rochester Rhinos, a team United beat in last year's run to the title.
