Do Skins want Cutler?

By: John Keim

The Redskins reportedly have entered talks about a three-way trade to acquire Jay Cutler and jettison Jason Campbell. (Getty Images)

Source says Washington has serious interest in QB

The Redskins have serious interest in Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, an NFL source said Tuesday, and have entered talks about a possible three-way deal to acquire him.

Two NFL sources confirmed the possibility of a three-way trade, with Kansas City being mentioned by one source as a possibility.

The Redskins, through a team spokesman, denied interest in Cutler. However, a league source was adamant that Washington has shown interest.

“They’re trying to do something,” one NFL source said of the Redskins.

“Whether or not it materializes is another matter, but [Redskins owner Dan Snyder] is on this hard. They don’t trust Jason Campbell.”

Cutler is involved in a dispute with Denver after the Broncos had discussions about trading him to New England for quarterback Matt Cassel.

First-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels met with Culter this past weekend. Afterward, Cutler said he could not trust McDaniels and wanted to be traded.

Denver has said they don’t want to trade Cutler for draft picks, meaning the Redskins or the third team would have to surrender at least one top player. The Redskins could also end up with Denver tight end Tony Scheffler, who is represented by the same agent as Culter — Bus Cook.

Fueling the speculation is the close relationship between former Denver coach Mike Shanahan and Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato. Shanahan, who traded several times with Cerrato while with Denver, could provide the endorsement needed for Cutler.

Also, after the season Cerrato gave Campbell a tepid endorsement as Washington’s quarterback of the future. Campbell is entering the last year of his contract and the Redskins have not had discussions about extending his deal.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn has praised Campbell publicly this offseason.
The strong-armed Cutler, 25, made the Pro Bowl this past season after throwing 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In three seasons he’s tossed 54 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. In 16 games this past season, Campbell threw 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Cutler signed a six-year, $48-million contract in 2006. Campbell has a base salary of $2.5 million this season with a cap number of $7.5 million.

Examiner columnist Rick Snider contributed to this report.

This would be awesome for the skins. Campbell is an alright quarterback who has potential but Cutler is the sure thing. If I were Snyder I would pull the trigger.

Wow indeed....Cutler in a Redskins jersey? Sounds too good to be true. Jason Candle in all fairness has been a good Redskin...yes I like the commercial. If it happens it would provide some needed excitement to the organization. Jason would be at least as successful elsewhere in the league. Good luck to them both.

I've been waiting to hear the redskins are interested. As soon as I heard he wanted out I immediately thought about washington. Campbell out, Cutler IN!

THANK YOU VINNY. bout time. skins give up campbell + kedric golston + 4th round pick, cassel goes to denver, cutler to dc, golston to KC, 4th round pick to kc, campbell to kc. talk about actually getting an offense. let devin thomas and malcolm kelly battle it out for the role of big receiver (a la brandon marshall), santana plays eddie royal (except better), cooley is cooley, and theres even a running back to work with!

jay

Mar 17, 2009

To relievedFan: WHY on earth would KC make that deal? That makes no sense whatsoever. You think KC would deal Cassel for a Campbell, a 4th rounder and Golston? I don't think Pioli is going to all of a sudden become a moron.

Mar 17, 2009

If this is for real, it needs to happen. I am a PG County transplant living the beach life in the heart of SEC country - I had plenty of time to watch Campbell at Auburn and he is not the same guy in the NFL. Time for a move and Cutler is the real deal.

Mar 17, 2009

Person said---> "how the hell are the redskins getting all these players witl only 6 million under the cap???????????????????" Sorry bud but there is alot more to those numbers then what is put out. To those who say this can't go down because of cap, your dead wrong! It was said that no way Haynesworth lands in DC b.c of the skins cap numbers but we all know where he is now. Point is, if Snyder really wants it, he'll get it!

I think you guys are looking at the worng Chief...There's no mention of Cassell in the trade. LJ makes more sense going to Denver. Denver has no running game.

BWillis

Mar 17, 2009

Denver has no running game? Peyton Hills was one of the best looking backs the second half of the season! As for Cutler to the Skins.. Where did we get Portis? Oh yeah..Denver.

Mar 18, 2009

it would make more sense if betis were involved in a trade to kc , since kc doesent have a running game. add campbell to that trade and it seems more logical

KC

Mar 18, 2009

If KC takes Campbell and gives away Cassell, GM will be the dumbest person on the state of Missouri. We already had Herm and we don't need anymore morons in KC. Cutler or Cassell are fine in KC and someone please take LJ, but give us at least of defensive player that can do something... SACKS!!!

And once again, the lack of education from my Fellow Kansas City residents continues to astound me... To all those intelligent folk who read this thread, I apologize in advance, too much Intelligent Design, not enough Evolution, in Kansas and Missouri...

BWillis

Mar 18, 2009

I did get off the topic. I honestly see Cutler to Washington as a lateral move. Washingtons offensive line and fan base havent given Campbell a chance to show what he can do.

BWillis

Mar 18, 2009

KC.. thats the truest thing Ive heard all day. KC is need of a solid young defensive player. God forbid Washington does something stupid like trade LaRon Landry.

Mar 18, 2009

Dont get your hopes up, no way will Washington ever get a real QB. Danny only over pays for washed up players anyway.

redskins87

Mar 18, 2009

Look guys, we can sit here and fantasize all we want about it. But someone please tell me, what trade scenario would it take for this to happen?? In all honesty, the redskins neeeed draft picks, and quarterback, as we all know, is NOT their most pressing need. Get some more youth and strength on the O-line, and let's see how Campbell progresses in his second season in the W-coast offense. Sure, Cutler is a phenomenal talent, but I just think the redskins need to meet other position issues before trading away more youth and more draft picks for one player...

Mar 18, 2009

i think even trading Cutler would be the dumbest thing denver ever could do. ASk indy

Campbell is an okay QB, but nowhere near elite. If they can get Cutler, that would be awesome, he reminds me of a young Joe Theismann

Make the deal happen Danny. JC flat-out stinks, and he is dumb as a rock when it comes to football IQ. Time to get a real franchise QB.

What are we going to have to give up besides Campbell? Its not worth wasting more future picks.

I'm never reading the examiner again, this is just a bunch of stupid people tied together to form something that people will talk about. Stop misleading people for your own entertainment.

Ajay

Mar 18, 2009

Cutler is a far better QB than Campbell. Its clear the team doesn't trust Campbell, because 2 coaching staffs just couldn't bring themselves to use their full offense with Campbell. They couldn't even let him throw deep - which should be a strength given his arm strength. In fairness, Campbell's slow delivery is a big negative for him. I bet a problem to this trade is that no one really wants JC, unless as a possible backup.

bigmistake

Mar 18, 2009

All of you who think this a good idea are morons. Cutler is a whiney little child who only complain if things don't go his way. Yeah he was a pro-bowler but still has never proven to be consistant. Plus the trade has been rumored to also involve Cooley and Landry and at least 1 if not 2 picks. This might be the worsye trade out Vinny has ever been a part of and that is a tough claim to make.

Snyder Boy

Mar 18, 2009

Stop questioning Snyder's judgement and keep buying those Skins jerseys!!!

I DON'T THINK SO....

Mar 18, 2009

Hmmmm....: "Santana Moss WR Jason Campbell WR Antwaan Randle El WR Todd Yoder TE Cornelius Griffith DT Andre Carter DE for Jay Cutler QB Eddie Royal WR Tony Scheffler TE Carlton Powell DT Tim Crowder DE" MADDEN '09 WOULDN'T EVEN ACCEPT THIS TRADE.

INKC

Mar 18, 2009

Not seeing how KC fits in this; Cutler to WAS, someone from WAS to KC (who?), and ultimately, someone from KC to DEN (which makes no sense trading within the division). Campbell for Cassel would be idiotic at best. KC already pulled enough strings to get Cassel, why ship him off? KC is set. Leave the Chiefs out of the Cutler drama that is Denver.

moosepod

Mar 18, 2009

Guys, The rumor has it that if this were to go down, we would have to give up both Laron Landry and Chris Cooley in addition to Campbell. I don't really think we should get rid of our best players on either side of the ball. Besides, who would Cutler even throw to?

benevolent anarchist

Mar 18, 2009

worst source in the NFL. Skins have NO interest whatsoever in Cutler. What a waste of space this "article" was. LOL.

MS

Mar 18, 2009

I like Jason, but I don't think he can ever be the QB that Cutler can be. Jason always seems to have problems reading defences inside the "Red Zone". Just look at his TD totals over the last three years.

What?

Mar 18, 2009

This traade maks no sense and if the rumor is true about Coolie is possible. Whay give up a sure thing and let remember Cutler has only played in the AFC West, not the same as NFC east. The east will hit you. Danny boy better really think this over.

Matt Cassel still doesn't have a number assigned, but Vrabel does. Isn't that a sign that Cassel may never don a Chiefs uni?

bronncohowie

Mar 18, 2009

Why would any team want Campbell ? The trade would HAVE to bring Cassell to Denver. Why would K.C. want Campbell ? I really don't understand this at all unless, somehow, the Chiefs come off of Cassell.

Skins need to leave well enough alone. Next year, if the OLine is improved, if their rookie receivers progress, and if Portis has another Pro Bowl year (idiots forget he was NFL's 4th best rusher), JC will flourish with another year under his belt, trust me. Cutler may have had the better year, but that's all. I don't think he would have had a better year this year in the Skins offense.

goskins

Mar 18, 2009

Cooley is a Denver fan that may add to Campbell being more valuable. Loosing Cooley make getting cry-baby Cutler less desirable. It will be interesting if Campbell starts getting upset - I dought that he would

I heard that they were going to give up Cooley and Campbell for Cutler and someone else... Do Not Trade Cooley. I repeat Do not trade Cooley

SURE THING????

Mar 20, 2009

Cutler has an ego issue, just what we the skins need someone that thinks they are bigger than the team and gets hurt feelings. He has 17-20 record and you guys are putting him in the HOF.

JC6toSkinsPlease

Mar 20, 2009

husker4kc: "For All you Cutler fans, you understand that he is 1 game over 500 over the last 2 seasons....(his best 2 seasons)" - Denver Broncos are 1 game over .500. Not just Cutler, MORON. QB's do not win/lose games all by themselves. Go ahead, blame Cutler because Denver has no DEF. I'd take him in D.C. in a second.

westcoastskins

Mar 21, 2009

please give us cutler so we could finally get over the qb hump while we still have the talent of our recievers &backfield. jason is good but to inconsistent to lead our team

Can the Redskins afford Cutler with the salary he will bring. It might be interesting if they could work it out.
