Washington controls its postseason destiny
The gist » The Freedom (7-7-5) will not only earn a Women's Pro Soccer postseason berth but clinch third place -- and with it, a first-round home playoff game -- with a victory over Sky Blue (7-7-5). Washington also is through with a tie, as it will own the tiebreaker with the New Jersey club. The Freedom also could sneak through the playoff back door with a loss, as long as Boston (7-8-4) also loses its regular-season finale against Los Angeles.
The All-Stars » Freedom forward Abby Wambach was named WPS player of the month for July after piling up four goals and an assist during that stretch. Wambach was the first American player to earn the honor this season. Washington midfielder Sonia Bompastor was the team's sole selection to the WPS All-Star First XI.
