Cutler traded to Chicago

According to an Examiner source, the Redskins are nearing completion of a trade that would bring Broncos QB Jay Cutler to Washington. (Paul Spinelli/Getty Images)

In the end, Denver did not want Jason Campbell. And that’s why Jay Cutler is headed to Chicago.

According to a source involved in the discussions, the Redskins were closing in on a three-way deal Thursday afternoon that involved Cleveland quarterback Brady Quinn going to Denver. The source said he was told that the deal was likely to happen soon. The Examiner reported that a deal was close. Indeed, a CBS affiliate in Denver also reported that Jay Cutler had told them he was told by his agent that he was going to Washington. ESPN also reported that the Redskins were at the top of the list and a deal could happen at any time.

However, the deal involving the Browns unraveled, prompting Chicago to jump back in and offer a less-complicated deal, knowing the Broncos liked Bears quarterback Kyle Orton. The source said Denver’s preference of quarterbacks was Quinn and then Orton. They were not high on Campbell.

So, rather than do a three-way deal with Washington and another team, the Bears, according to an NFL source, called to offer Orton, two first-round draft picks, and a third-round pick in exchange for Cutler and a fifth-round pick.

“They had the compensation,” another NFL source said of the Redskins. “In the end they chose Orton over Campbell.”

The Redskins had been among a handful of teams interested in Cutler, along with Tampa Bay and the New York Jets. Washington may not be done searching for another quarterback. They recently worked out USC's Mark Sanchez.

Campbell is entering the last year of his contract and the Redskins have not made any movement toward extending his deal. Another NFL source called that a “sure sign” of their thoughts on Campbell.

And they wanted Cutler because he’s a 25-year-old Pro Bowl passer who has a strong arm and is mobile.

“They’re getting a guy that is not in the upper echelon of quarterbacks,” CBS analyst Charley Casserly said. “But he seems to be heading that way.”

Thank goodness. I was terrified we were going to get this mentally weak tool. Thank you Snyder, have fun explaining to the rest of the team why they can't retaliate when Cutler blames them for his screw ups!

Todd, did you really see Cutler going into Dove Valley? Or are you pulling our legs? And why would he need to be there for a trade to happen?

Snyder Sucks

Apr 2, 2009

We're giving away whatever is packaged in with Campbell for nothing. He and Cutler are virtually the same person performance-wise, and Campbell is TEN times the professional Cutler is. The whiny baby went to Vandy, got no publicity, and now is milking the star power of Denver by sticking his nose up and acting like he's Namath-esque in caliber. Snyder, why do you constantly shoot this team in the foot like this!?!?

I seriously doubt that Washington will get Cutler, I really just don't see it happening. I think we should just give Campbell one more year to prove he can be our starting QB, and if he fails, well, then let's pursue another QB.

"The redskins are officially turning into superbowl contenders with this move... Missing piece to the puzzle." If this is sarcastic, then point taken. But my better judgemen tells me otherwise. Idiots like you are more dissapointing than moves like this. Please stop throwing gas on the fire with nonsenical dreams. This team sucks. They don't score enough to compete and it wasn't JC's fault that he had a line that's more dead than the parents in "Party of Five." You, whoever posted that, are despicable. You give redskins fans the laughable reputation that we clearly deserve. I demand an apology, you thoughtless pawn. Danny and his cross-eyed crusader have not broken us all. We can do something about this. We HAVE to. This won't stop until he's dead (this could be 50 years!!!). Boycot Fed Ex '09. Seriously. Do it. Enough is enough. Don't go. It's free.

Hey Skins fans: As a Broncos fan all I can say is if this goes down you will be getting a great arm attached to a imature possibly diva head! Be careful what you wish for. The situation here defies logic. If you get him don't be too hard on him cause he has an egg shell ego !!!!!

*facepalm* If this turns out to be true, it's a shame. Campbell is a good guy whose been hosed by a rotating system/coach carousel. I don't want that whiny, over-privileged man-baby Cutler at the head of my team, no matter how many TDs he throws.

thank god. thought he was gonna end up with the bears which would have made it a nightmare for the other north teams including my lions. glad to see that snyder is still dumb enough to break the bank for an immature, lying, backstabbing headcase qb who's negatives far outweigh his positives. way to go snyder. sorry skins fans.

This is terrible. I've been a Redskins fan for almost 30 years, absolute die-hard but this is absurd. I will cheer for Washington in every game, but if they play Jason Campbell's new team and he is the starter, I will root for Campbell (unless he plays for an NFC East team, of course)

What is Danny Boy thinking...This is a bad move. You just put yourself in the same predicament that Denver did. Now Jason will be disgruntle if he stays or goes. Best practices from in the business world say "with no stability in management, it leads to inconsitencies" and this is what is happening. How many coaches did Jason have in his tenucre here. Vinny Cer-Dumbo doesn't know what he is doing either. you are losing a die-hard fan with this move. I used to blee burgundy and gold. I may switch to a Cowgirls fan now or the Giants. D**kheads.

Campbell v. Cutler

Apr 2, 2009

Everyone in DC should have seen the quarterback situation coming. I was also lulled into a quiet confident complacency during the Gibbs>Zorn transition. But if you look at the 1st QB that Zorn drafted, Colt Brennan, he has no emotional or physical characteristics in common with Campbell. Brennan is a smaller, enthusiastic, energetic, fiery guy with good accuracy, almost in the Jeff Garcia mold. Zorn seems to have inherited Campbell, a stand-up Gibbs kind of guy, tried to coach him up to SCO, did see some improvement but also saw his ceiling. Brennan is probably not ready, that is why a stronger, more mobile, more fiery Pro Bowl Cutler is now in the mix. I don't think that this is just the old Snyder/Cerrato Xmas shopping. This time, they may have a reason?

Apr 2, 2009

its over cutler to bears!!! yeah! we keep campbell and the 13th pick!!

Apr 2, 2009

I hate Snyder. I hate Cerrato too. Just not sure who I hate more. Lets get that out of the way. Now, for people to say Campbell is good as Cutler and that he didn't have time to throw just doesn't know football. I've been defending Campbell for years. My reasons were, no line protection, different OCs every year, no WRs to throw to besides Moss, etc. But after watching Ryan and Flacco, I realized he's just an average qb. They're rookies but yet were able to make something happen out of nothing. Campbell just doesn't make plays when there's nothing there. Too afraid to take chances, doesn't scramble to buy time, etc. He's a good person and all, and Cutler has some questions about him. But Cutler is better than Campbell. I just hope we don't give up too much for Cutler."

After this debacle Washington has no other choice but to move Jason Campbell to another team. He is in the last year of his contract and there is no way, after this, he will sign an extension. I see them using Campbell to trade up to get either Stafford or Sanchez. The only other option is to trade their first rounder for the Browns Brady Quinn and then move Campbell to another team for a draft pick. Washington intensions are clear and now they have forced themselves to address this issue soon!
