Andruw Jones homers 3 times for Rangers against Angels

ANAHEIM, CALIF. — Andruw Jones hit three early home runs for the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

His first two homers came off Ervin Santana in the first and third innings. His third shot — a solo drive in the fifth — came against reliever Rich Thompson and gave the Rangers a 6-1 lead.

With a chance to tie the major league record for home runs in a game, Jones popped out in the sixth against Kevin Jepsen and was struck out by Jason Bulger leading off the ninth.

There have been 15 four-homer games in the majors. Carlos Delgado was the most recent player to do it, for Toronto in 2003.

It's the second career three-homer game for Jones, who last did it September 25, 2007, against Philadelphia. He's also the second player to hit three homers in a game in the last two days. Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox went deep three times against Cleveland on Tuesday night.

The last Rangers player to do it was Brad Wilkerson on July 3, 2007.
