NEW YORK — A minor league shortstop whose contract with the New York Yankees was voided earlier this year has been suspended 50 games after a positive drug test.
Damian Arredondo was penalized Wednesday under the minor league drug program. The commissioner's office said he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
Arredondo is now a free agent. His suspension will take effect when he signs with a major league organization.
The Yankees reached a deal in July with Arredondo, a switch-hitter from the Dominican Republic who claimed to be 16 years old. The deal was nullified later that month after Major League Baseball's department of investigations said a DNA test showed he misrepresented his name and age.
