Riggo blasts Snyder on Showtime's "Inside the NFL"

On this week’s edition of Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” former Redskins great John Riggins leveled some the harshest criticism ever spoken by a former player at the team’s owner Daniel Snyder. Riggins who hosted a daily radio show for Snyder’s Red Zebra Broadcasting group was not shy in sharing his thoughts about his former boss.

Here is part of the Hall of Famer's conversation with the show’s host James Brown and analyst Cris Collinsworth.
BROWN: John, you have been pretty doggone outspoken on the Washington Redskins and what is not working. Maybe it is an obvious question, but why so passionate? Why so intense in terms of your critique or criticism of the Redskins?
RIGGINS: First of all it’s what I do JB. I have been in broadcasting for the last 15-20 years, so it is sort of my job. And the other part is, and I’ve been asked this question a lot, when they say do you have an ax to grind, and I think anytime an older player criticizes or says anything about his former team, unless he’s throwing Bon Mots at them, that all of a sudden you get a, ‘What’s he griping at’ type of thing. Maybe that’s the case. But truthfully I do have an ax to grind and I just realized I have been a little bit disingenuous. But this is a bad guy that owns this team. I’ll just tell you that upfront. Bad guy. And if the Commissioner is worried about potential new owners and saying some of these guys shouldn’t apply, he might want to police his own inside guys.
BROWN: Why is he a bad guy?
RIGGINS: Because his business practices, I think. I don’t want to say they are unethical, but I don’t think it’s a place, a climate that is created there where people can be successful. It’s driven all by his ego and everything has to come from him. And I just don’t think you can be successful in those situations and when you are dealing with someone with the mindset of a child — and yet owns a franchise in the NFL — I think you have some problems there.
COLLINSWORTH: We are talking about Daniel Snyder. Are you saying in some way he is unethical? Because I have dealt with him in the past and I have never sensed anything close to that. Or are you saying he has made bad decisions on the football side as an owner? Or what is specifically the issue?
RIGGINS: I am saying that I don’t think that this franchise can be successful where you have people saying, ‘Oh this person Dan Snyder wants to win. He wants to win.’ It’s all about priorities, what’s my priorities? The priority is it’s all about me. I have to have my needs met then I want to make money, and or those are one and two, and then I want to win. You can see by the decisions that are made…I don’t know if you have agreed with anything I am saying so far, but at this point, I would think you would say, yeah I’ll go along with that. This person knows nothing about football, absolutely nothing. I don’t think they have a clue how a football team comes together, how it works. And yet they are the ones that are basically calling all the shots through a puppet, which is Vinny Cerrato. That is my take on it… I speak for the fans because these are the people that paid my salary for all these years. They are the ones that need to know that this is a bad guy.
COLLINSWORTH: There is a fine line between being a bad guy and a bad GM if you will. Are you saying a bad guy as in the NFL needs to take a look at this?
RIGGINS: Let me put it to you this way Cris, this person’s heart is dark.
COLLINSWORTH: Fix the Redskins. They make you the general manager tomorrow, who are you hiring as a coach?
RIGGINS: I can’t answer your question realistically, because I couldn’t be the General Manager with that ownership in place. I said I had an ax to grind. The ax to grind is that people need to know if you are going to go to these games and support this team that money goes in this person’s pocket. And you know what, bad guys shouldn’t be enriched.
The interview in its entirety can be seen on Showtime today at 4 p.m., midnight and on Friday at 7 p.m.

Host James Brown anchors INSIDE THE NFL on SHOWTIME with All-Pro NFL greats Cris Collinsworth, Phil Simms and Warren Sapp serving as expert analysts. Riggins made no point there. I take from that interview he is another has-been that is jealous of the money in the game these days. Snyder is not to be defended, but Riggins is not making any points at all. Grow up.

Dan Snyder is a bad man, but I wish he would have gotten into some of the reasons why (IE, how he sues season ticket holders who try to back out of contracts)

I am a radio vet with some 36 years in the business. I worked for Red Zebra, with the expectation that I would be able to help them win. The company was so poorly run, I realized that it wouldn't work. The (bad) culture was too overwhelming. All you have to do is looks at Snyder's businesses, i.e. Six Flags, Red Zebra, Redskins... all have severe problems. A good friend once told me, "fish rots from the head".

"Hey, loosen up, Baby!"
It is what he said to Sandra Day O’Connor right before he took a nap under the table, if I remember correctly.

I can't believe he's the only one who's coming out and saying this. The writing has been on the wall for years. I can't believe Portis or Campbell, who I feel have been burnt the worst as players with team, have not come out and said something. "Like this organization doesn't have a clue." Or, "When the hell am I going to be able to recognize my offensive coach from year to year?" I feel bad for the Washington fans, and players, hope something good happens for them soon.

Dan Snyder needs to fire Vinny Cerrato. Then he needs to hire a GM that knows football. Snyder needs to stick with what he knows best which is marketing and leave the football to the experts.

Riggo has been telling the truth for years.....i'm glad that even though he is a little hard to understand, that he is just wasting this little punk and its good to know that finally someone within his circle of employees, coaches etc has come out and spoken the truth. Snyder is a creep.

Note to Washington- Cleveland's GM is available. Also, we'd love to get rid of Head Coach Eric Manginious. Interested? How do these idiots get these jobs?

I don't even want to know how they get the jobs. It probably involves sicker stuff than you can find on the internet...scary. But really does the league just tell certain teams to be garbage for years, and then once they put in their dues they're allowed to compete? The league baffles me.

Riggo seems to have a hard time getting to the point, but I think many agree with his basic premise. I don't know if Snyder is a "bad guy", but it's obvious he has no clue as to how to put a winning franchise together, despite having more than enough money to make it happen. Get real football men, Danny boy, and keep your nose out of their business!

The main point is that Snyder only wants to win if it can be HIM winning--picking all the players, etc. He wants to be Jerry Jones, but he doesn't know anything about football. He is basically an incompetent fantasy team owner.

I think what John's trying to say is all Danny really cares about is himself. His comments about how he was sorry for the fans was disingenuous. He clearly wants the spotlight to be on himself instead of the team.

He also comes across as a money grubber. I understand it's a business and businesses exist to make money, but he should be careful in how he treats his customers. Most stores accept returns for things they rightfully shouldn't have to accept. They do because goodwill has a value. Danny doesn't seem to understand this. The bad press he's received suing unfortunate season ticket holders isn't worth the bad press. Particularly when the team could easily sell the tickets to someone else for equal value. Paying exorbitant salaries doesn't help the team look any better.

Danny just needs to grow a pair and go on his radio station, your radio station or inside the NFL and debate Riggo face to face. But the Danny needs lawyers, sycophants and vinny me to do his talking for him. He is a Chicken. A little fat Chicken. The Danny is a chick chick chick chick chick chicken.

Here are a few of many solid players and coaches "fat, little Danny" Snyder dumped during his lengthy tenure in Washington:
LeVar Arrington,Brian Mitchell, Sean Springs, Champ Baily, Antonio Pierce,Gregg Williams,Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, and Brad Johnson. Danny Boy better hope they don't start talking as well.

John Riggins should ask Snyder to remove his name from the stadiums' "Ring of Honor". That will get his attention. Actually, Dan Snyder should be "run out of town on a rail", as they say...

Would love to see Riggo lead a group of fans to take over the team. Riggo could have made his case discussing the mistreatment of so many coaches, players, and even fans. Collecting on judgement against ticktholders and then reselling and double-dipping, etc should have provided enough substantiation of Snyder's "business practices". Riggo made a strong statement but did not provide examples. If he had given a national audience such examples, we might have seen Chris and others on the show less likely to "want to be balanced"..... Time for someone Like Riggo to represent a group of fans to propose a buyout of the team. Wouldn't it be great for the fans to own the team represented by a real Board Of Directors to which a REAL GM could report to!
