Caps Second Period Update

Blue Jackets 2, Caps 1

That's about as bad a period as you can have. Caps F Alex Ovechkin seemed to favor his right shoulder as he skated off the ice in the second period. He had gotten into a scrum with Columbus F Jason Chimera right in front of the Blue Jackets' bench. Reacted to something, Ovechkin gave out a two-handed cross-check. It actually resulted in a Caps PP. F Jared Boll got 2 for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct.

Ovechkin came back for a shift when his penalty expired. But he was knocked to the ice and immediately skated for the locker room. He hasn't been seen since. We'll have more when we get an update from the team. To add insult to injury, Rick Nash continued his domination of the Caps with a goal and an assist. The second Columbus goal - from R.J. Umberger - resulted from a bad bounce off the end boards while Jose Theodore waited to play the puck. Washington has benefited often enough from those types of plays in recent years. The New York Rangers, especially, will get a nice chuckle when they see that highlight tonight. Caps are 0-for-4 on the PP. They also took three penalties in the second period.

UPDATE: For what it's worth, Caps GM George McPhee says Ovechkin "may return." So there's that.
