Caps Second Period Update

Caps 1, Devils 1

Set up for a good third period. Both goalies are playing well. Semyon Varlamov was unlucky on the one goal he did allow and his rebound control has been good. Martin Brodeur flat robbed Caps defenseman Mike Green with a glove save on a blast from the slot. Both have 16 saves. There was even a nice fight between Caps captain Chris Clark and Devils forward Rod Pelley - trying to generate some energy in a building that hasn't had much life tonight. The referees have called just one minor penalty on each team. Have to believe that will change in the third as both teams push for the win.

Alex Ovechkin - just on with Comcast SportsNet for a between-periods interview - said he's been impressed with rookie center Mathieu Perreault, who had another strong period after assisting on the Caps' goal by Tyler Sloan in the first. Mike Green had a passing attempt by Brian Rolston bank off his hand and past Varlamov for New Jersey's goal. Caps were held to just six shots in the second.
