Here at Spotlight, we always love to write about happy hour specials in the District. This week we're excited to highlight a new happy hour menu at the just-opened Penn Quarter sensation Daikaya (705 Sixth St. NW) featuring innovative Japanese fare such as chicken karaage, grilled cherry tomatoes with miso-chedder fondue, and fried shishito peppers with jalapeno marmalade. To complement the cuisine, Daikaya will also offer plenty of refreshing -- and cheap -- libations such as the signature Daikaya Punch with fresh grapefruit and an eight-ounce carafe of Gekkeikan's House sake. If you're in the mood for thirst-quenching summer beer, you can order a $4 draft of DC Brau's the Citizen and Anchor Steam's Summer Ale to name a few.

These new specials will be featured Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. We'd also like to note that these small plates change often, so come back again to see what other dishes are available.

Let's face it -- food just tastes better when its free, especially when it comes in the form of Haagen-Dazs ice cream. Free Cone Day is back today by popular demand at nine Haagen-Dazs stores in the Washington area. Enjoy a complimentary scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor any time from 4 to 8 p.m. There are plenty of new flavors for you to try, including Stracciatella, Black Cherry Amaretto, Cappuccino and Sea Salt Caramel. Last year, they scooped more than 205,000 cones, and they can't wait to break the record this year. We can't think of a more perfect summer treat that gives you an excuse to get out of work a little early!
