Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon predicted President Trump's base would quickly abandon him if the president pivots on gun control after the Las Vegas massacre.

"Impossible: will be the end of everything," Bannon told Axios.

Bannon expects Trump's base would react harsher toward the president if he backs gun control than they would if he announced he supported amnesty for illegal immigrants.

"As hard as it is to believe actually worse," Bannon said of Trump voters' possible reaction.

Trump said early Tuesday that he'll talk "later" about gun reform.

"We'll be talking about gun laws as time goes by," Trump told reporters as he left the White House to survey damage in Puerto Rico.

Trump's comments came two days after 64-year-old Stephen Paddock opened fire on a country music concert in Las Vegas, killing 59 people and wounding more than 500 others.
