House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was named the honorary coach for the upcoming College World Series after he was wounded during a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice on Wednesday.
The current coach of Scalise's alma matter, Paul Mainieri, dubbed the congressman and outspoken LSU fan, honorary coach on Thursday.
"He really is in our thoughts and prayers," the coach said in a video message on Thursday. "We're hoping that he is going to have a full recovery and a speedy recovery but my understanding is he's having to deal with some real issues here."
Members of Congress sported LSU baseball caps in honor of Scalise during the Congressional Baseball Game on Thursday. Democrats defeated Republicans 11-2 on Thursday but handed the trophy to their opponents to give to Scalise as continues to receive treatment for his wounds.
