Montana Republican Greg Gianforte slammed Ben Jacobs to the ground on the evening of May 24, 2017, punching the Guardian reporter repeatedly in the face and breaking his glasses. He woke up the next day to misdemeanor assault charges and a check from Las Vegas Casino mogul Steve Wynn.

Per the Federal Election Commission, the wrestling Republican received $2,700 from Wynn on May 25. He had donated $6,350 to the Gianforte Victory Fund two weeks earlier on May 12, of which $3,650 eventually went to the state Republican party and the remainder to the candidate.

More than half-a-year later, a Wall Street Journal report detailed allegations that Wynn forced dozens of his female employees into sex for more than a decade. Since the report, Gianforte has promised to donate the $2,700 to charity.

Note: An earlier version of this article, based on incomplete FEC data, noted incorrectly that Wynn wrote a check on May 25. While those funds were finally disbursed on May 25, Wynn actually made the donation on May 12 before the attack. The author regrets the error.
