He hid it well as president, but as a retired chief executive looking for any way to get a laugh or brighten somebody's day, George H.W. Bush has revealed his secret craving: crazy-colored socks.

On Wednesday, his 89th birthday, Bush showed off his latest purchase to Secrets, colorful Superman socks. He even pulled up his khakis while riding in a golf cart to show them off to his photographer who shipped us the picture.

"Yes, they are Superman socks!" said his spokesman, Jim McGrath.

Staff at the George Bush Presidential Library Foundation in College Station, Texas, commemorated his birthday by wearing "exuberant socks" and encouraged others to post their crazy sock pictures online.

Bush has been showing off his bright socks lately. At the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Center in April, he wore bright pink socks with a hint of blue. In 2012 he told his granddaughter Jenna Bush Hager, that he "likes a good sock."

And in April, former first lady Barbara Bush at one of her trademark reading events opened with a video tribute to "America's favorite Sock-Lover in Chief."
