Shortly after his speech to the Tea Party Patriots on Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, blasted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., for having "contempt" for the American people.

Cruz referred to Reid's recent comments calling Obamacare horror stories "untrue."

"Yesterday, Harry Reid had the temerity to go on the floor of the Senate and say that every one that has lost their job, that has lost their health insurance, that is suffering because of Obamacare, that they're liars," Cruz said during a XM/Sirius radio interview with Breitbart News.

"You know what? When our elected officials stand up and call the people that put them in office liars, that manifests the contempt that they have," he added.

Cruz fired up conservative activists during his speech at the Tea Party Patriots conference celebrating the five year anniversary of the Tea Party.

"God bless the Tea Party," Cruz said as he took the stage as the crowd chanted "Ted, Ted, Ted!"
