Ted Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship, Monday, after a report in the Dallas Morning News suggested he technically had duel citizenship as he was born in Canada to an American mother.

“Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship,” Cruz said in a statement. “Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator, I believe I should be only an American.”

Cruz said that since his family left Calgary when he was four, and lived in the U.S., he never took affirmative steps to claim his Canadian citizenship.
