Laid-off workers who spoke in a commercial for Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's gubernatorial campaign were never told they would be appearing in a political ad, Mother Jones reports.

The former employees of Global Crossing, a firm that filed for bankruptcy in 2002, were told that they were being filmed for a documentary. Terry McAuliffe, Cuccinelli's Democratic opponent in the race, "cashed in" on the bankruptcy, the ad says, banking $8 million on an investment of $100,000.

McAuliffe said Cuccinelli's campaign "tricked people" and that the attorney general should apologize to the people shown in the ad.

"He needs to take the ad down immediately. It is disgraceful what has been done to these people."
