President Trump said he is sticking with Vice President Mike Pence as his running mate in 2020 in response to Nikki Haley being pitched as a better option for the president’s chances in securing a second term.
“I love Nikki, and there’s places for Nikki, and Nikki’s future is great. But Mike Pence is the person, 100%,” Trump said Wednesday.
“We won together. We have tremendous evangelical support. We have tremendous support from every angle. You can’t break up a team like that. And we get along well together,” he added.
An op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on Sunday urged Trump to replace Pence with the former ambassador to the United Nations.
“It’s too late for Mr. Trump to revamp his political personality. But with the 2016 election in the past, Nikki Haley on the ticket could tamp down the antipathy for Mr. Trump that seems to afflict so many moderate and Republican-leaning women. President Trump needs the prospect of a Vice President Haley to help recapture the White House,” the writer, Andrew Stein, said.
Trump said Stein, a Democrat, is a friend of his.
