Ex-DHS official admits to bribes

A former regional director in the Department of Homeland Security pleaded guilty to accepting more than $12,000 in bribes from a Virginia contractor.

Derek Matthews, 46, of Harwood, Md., admitted in federal court in Alexandria that a contractor paid him $50,000 a year as a "consultant" to help the company win government contracts.

Matthews was regional director for the National Capital Region of DHS's Federal Protective Services.

Matthews received at least three monthly payments totaling $12,500 before the scheme unraveled.

An executive at the Arlington-based security contractor, Keith Hedman, pleaded guilty last month to more than $30 million in contract fraud for falsely representing that his company qualified for preferential status as a minority-owned business.

Teacher charged with assault of middle school student

A 61-year-old Virginia middle school teacher is accused of assaulting a student during class.

Curtis Craig Smith, a technology education teacher at Fred Lynn Middle School in Woodbridge, has been charged with assault and battery after a student sustained a minor injury to his arm following an incident Tuesday, according to the Prince William County police.

The student reported the incident to school officials and, following an investigation by school police, Smith was arrested.

Body found near cherry blossoms

D.C. police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the Tidal Basin.

The body was discovered at about 1 a.m. Thursday. According to media reports, it was found near the FDR Memorial.

Later Thursday morning, the body had only been identified as that of a man. The cause and manner of the man's death will be determined by the medical examiner's office, said D.C. police spokesman Officer Araz Alali.
