Water main fixed after massive flooding

Workers from DC Water repaired a busted water main early Sunday morning at 17th Street between Rhode Island and Pennsylvania avenues NW, but not before millions of gallons of water flooded a construction site.

Local businesses and residences were without water for most of Saturday and multiple roads were closed after the water main burst about 4:30 a.m. Crews worked to fix a segment of the 20-inch-diameter water main which had a roughly six-foot-long rupture. All of the roads were reopened by Sunday.

A 40-foot deep excavation site was nearly completely filled in with water and several pieces of heavy machinery were submerged. A nearby hotel also experienced flooding in the basement.
