Biden: Democratic field will be ‘winnowed out pretty quickly’

Former Vice President Joe Biden predicted the crowded field of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates will begin to quickly shrink in the upcoming months.

More than 20 Democrats are already running for the party’s nomination to take on President Trump in the general election, and at least two more candidates are still expected to join the race in the coming weeks.

“This field is going to be winnowed out pretty quickly,” Biden told reporters Wednesday in Los Angeles, according to Politico.

Biden cited the 15% viability threshold Democratic candidates need in the Iowa caucuses, which take place in February, and California awarding its delegates weeks later.

“It’s going to work its way through relatively quickly for all of us,” he said.

Biden said he chose to enter the race later than a majority of the other White House hopefuls because “the process is already too long.”

A RealClearPolitics average of polling data has Biden leading the pack by almost 27 percentage points.
