Gen. John Kelly and his wife attended a breakfast for Gold Star families hosted by former President Barack Obama despite President Trump's claim that his predecessor did not reach out to the Kelly family.

A source close to the situation told AP the Kellys sat at a table with former first lady Michelle Obama at the breakfast, which took place just six months after their son had died.

AP also obtained a White House visitor log that confirms the Kelly family attended this event.

This recent revelation comes after Trump stirred up some controversy by claiming his predecessors did not call the families of fallen soldiers as often as he does.

On Tuesday morning, the controversy deepened when Trump told FOX News radio host Brian Kilmeade, "You could ask Gen. Kelly, did he get a call from Obama?"

When asked for immediate comment, a White House spokesperson said that Obama did not call the Kelly family but would not say if he reached out in another fashion.

Former Obama spokesman Ned Price also noted Gen. Kelly should "stop" this behavior, adding "He saw up-close just how — & how much — Obama cared for the fallen's families."
