President Trump said Thursday that his hardline position on North Korea deserves more credit for forcing the regime to consider negotiations with South Korea.

"With all of the failed 'experts' weighing in, does anybody really believe that talks and dialogue would be going on between North and South Korea right now if I wasn’t firm, strong and willing to commit our total 'might' against the North. Fools, but talks are a good thing!" Trump tweeted early Thursday.

This week, South Korea said it planned to hold meetings with North Korea next week about Kim Jong Un's ongoing missile tests and commitment to develop nuclear weapons.

The Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, next month. Kim is expected to request that his athletes be allowed to participate, which could give room for denuclearization talks.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has said U.S. athletes should not attend the Olympics if North Korean athletes are permitted to compete.
