President Trump on Wednesday slammed a plan under consideration by the NFL to have teams wait in their locker rooms during the national anthem in order to prevent the controversial protests that have already drawn the president's ire.

"The NFL is now thinking about a new idea — keeping teams in the Locker Room during the National Anthem next season," Trump tweeted. "That’s almost as bad as kneeling! When will the highly paid Commissioner finally get tough and smart? This issue is killing your league!"

Trump has fiercely criticized NFL players who kneel during the national anthem in order to protest racial inequality. The president threw a spotlight on the issue earlier this year when he called on team owners to bench players that engage in the protests, which swept the league after Trump started talking about the protests.

On Monday, Trump went after Marshawn Lynch, running back for the Oakland Raiders, for refusing to stand during the anthem, calling on the NFL to "suspend him for the remainder of the season" if he kneels again.
