President Trump offered the support of the U.S. on Monday to the parents of Charlie Gard, a sick 10-month-old baby in England whose doctors have ordered to be taken off a ventilator.

"If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so," Trump wrote on Twitter.

Gard is in the terminal stages of a mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome. Doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital in Britain have called for the baby to die in dignity, while his parents, Connie and Chris, have argued he should be able to seek treatment in the U.S.

Gard's parents have raised $1.3 million in hopes of being able to take him out of the hospital to the United States for treatment.

Trump's tweet in support of the parents breaks with a recent string of criticism of the media's coverage of his administration.
