President Trump offered some kind words for Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Pa., and his bid to unseat Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., in 2018, saying that the Republican congressman is "going to win big" in the race.
Trump made the remarks while opening up an event in Harrisburg, Pa., early Wednesday evening on tax reform.
"Great guy," Trump said, incorrectly telling the crowd he's running for governor before correcting himself. "He's running for the Senate ... So I heard he was running for governor, but then I heard he was running for the Senate."
"He's going to win. You're going to win big," Trump said.
Trump has not officially endorsed the Hazleton-based congressman who was an ardent backer of his presidential campaign in 2016. A longtime immigration hardliner, Barletta announced his bid during the August recess.
Barletta is running against Casey, who is seeking his third term in the Senate. Casey, a former two-time statewide officeholder, won his seat back in 2006 by defeating two-term Republican Sen. Rick Santorum and will be tough to knock off.
According to a Franklin & Marshall poll released in September, 45 percent of voters hold a favorable view of the incumbent Democrat compared to 42 percent who view him unfavorably. Twelve percent were undecided and 10 percent don't know enough about him.
