President Trump and Vice President Pence will cancel scheduled speeches on Wednesday in the wake of a shooting at a congressional baseball practice where Republican congressmen were practicing for an upcoming charity game.

Trump had been scheduled to announce a workforce development initiative at the Department of Labor on Wednesday afternoon. Pence was scheduled to deliver a speech to a homebuilders' group.

A White House official told the Washington Examiner Trump plans to cancel his events in light of the shooting.

Trump had said in a statement circulated earlier Wednesday he felt "deeply saddened" by the shooting in Alexandria, Va.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, congressional aides and Capitol Police officers were among the injured. Law enforcement officials have not yet identified the suspected shooter, who is in custody and undergoing treatment after Scalise's security detail shot him at the scene.
