President Trump compared Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to a hypocrite for his opposition to the firing of FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday evening.
"Cryin' Chuck Schumer stated recently, 'I do not have confidence in him (James Comey) any longer.' Then acts so indignant. #draintheswamp," Trump tweeted around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday.
The New York Democrat knocked Comey in November after he called into question then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the final days of the presidential race.
On Tuesday evening, Schumer labeled Comey's termination a "coverup," alleging the White House was trying to distract the public from the investigation into Donald Trump's campaign's possible contact with Russia during the election.
"I told the president, 'with all due respect, you are making a big mistake,'" Schumer told reporters at a press conference Tuesday. "The first question that he has to answer is, why now?"
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway responded that the reason Trump wrote in his letter to Comey that the director had assured him on three occasions that he was not under investigation, was to set the record straight for the incoming FBI director.
