Mocking leftists online these days is a mixed bag: They provide endless material, but they also control social media and can swiftly shut you down.
Such is the fate of “MadeByJimBob,” a series of simply drawn, rightward-leaning memes that first appeared on Instagram and Facebook in 2016. Originally just pop culture gags, the posts soon took a political turn as JimBob, the cartoons’ mononymous creator, began to reconsider the routine liberalism of his entertainment-industry circles in Los Angeles. In a matter of weeks, JimBob attracted thousands of followers for his deft slap-downs of left-wing orthodoxies and double standards, and discovered just as quickly how apt the host sites were to delete his work.
The erasures proved both unexplained and arbitrary. The first to go was a drawing of Hitler in a reflective pose, thinking, “If everyone’s me now, who am I?” — a seemingly harmless comment about the nature of political rhetoric. The latest was a meme that does little more than call Texas presidential hopeful and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke “dumb.” (See below.)
The 38-year-old JimBob now lives in Denver with his wife and two small children, working days as a jewelry designer and selling copies of his new book Savage Memes, Volume 1 on the side. To welcome JimBob to his new home here in Your Land, we thought we’d share what Instagram and Facebook won’t: Of the six cartoons printed below, the bottom three were pulled, JimBob says. Let the outrage commence!
