A man and a woman were found dead in a Laurel apartment complex Thursday morning, and police said their deaths have been ruled a double homicide.

A third person -- the deceased woman's 25-year-old special-needs daughter -- was taken to a hospital after the slayings for an evaluation but was not physically injured during the incident, according to Prince George's County police.

Officers went to the apartment on the 9600 block of Muirkirk Road at about 8:15 a.m., after the caregiver of the special-needs woman called police and asked them to perform a welfare check. When officers arrived, they discovered the two victims dead at the scene with trauma to their upper bodies, police said.

On Thursday afternoon, police officials had not released the names of the deceased or specified the exact relationship between the victims. The medical examiner's office will likely conduct autopsies Friday to determine the victims' causes of death, police spokesman Lt. Bill Alexander said.

Some neighbors told police that they heard loud voices in the area of the apartment at about 5 a.m., but police are not sure if the noise is connected to the slayings. Detectives are working to determine the motive and suspect(s) for the incident. Alexander said there were no signs of forced entry in the apartment.

Charles Collins, a neighbor of the victims, told media outlets that the couple was friendly but that there were a lot of people going in and out of the home.

"He was always having cookouts. Even if he didn't know you, he'd offer you food and offer you a beer," Collins told

the Gazette.
