PHOENIX (AP) — Two college students are asking a judge to let them help defend Maricopa County Community College District from a lawsuit that seeks to block the district's policy of providing in-state tuition to young immigrants granted deferred deportation by the Obama administration.

The Arizona Capitol Times reports Glendale Community College student Abel Badillo and Phoenix College student Bibiana Vasquez contend they should be allowed as defendants in Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne's lawsuit that seeks to block the district's policy.

The students say they have an interest in the lawsuit's outcome, which would be a 291 percent increase in tuition if Horne wins.

Opponents of the policy say that extending reduced tuition to those youths violates a state law that prohibits any immigrant without legal status from receiving public benefits.
