It's a tough week to be Secretary of State John Kerry.

As fighting continues between Israeli and Palestinian forces this week, several Israeli media outlets are criticizing Kerry's efforts to broker a peace deal, suggesting Kerry has in fact made matters worse.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest rejected those claims Tuesday, saying, "Secretary Kerry has worked doggedly over the last year or so since he took office ... pressing both sides to the negotiating table in search of a broader peace agreement."

The White House also says it is in the interest of the Israeli people that the negative attention currently focused on Kerry "not affect his ability to continue to be a strong advocate for them."
