Hundreds of transit workers and supporters gathered outside the Capitol on Thursday, chanting a rallying cry: "Fix it, fund it, make it fair."
Interstate highways aren't the only federally funded entities facing cuts if the Highway Trust Fund runs out of money at the end of the summer.
"What would America look like for just one day without transit?" Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., asked the crowd. "America would grind to a halt."
Mass transit programs across the nation also get funds from the Highway Trust Fund.
"We are here to convince Senate and Congress to fund transit," said Lillian Shavers, a transit worker from Delaware.
Shavers came with a group of friends to tell Congress just how important mass transit is to her.
"A lot of people, millions of people, depend on transit to get to work, to get to school," exclaimed Shavers.
Blumenauer says he's got the answer: "Raise the gas tax."
