Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., called for student loan debt reform in his first campaign rally in his 2014 re-election bid.

"You talk about what the next crisis is going to be?" Warner asked the crowd. "It's going to be student debt. Right now America is at $1.1 trillion in student debt. That's more that credit card debt."

He goes on to say higher education should be affordable for everyone.

This campaign rally is just a start for Warner, who is in a closely watched national race with former Republican National Committee chairman Ed Gillespie.

The democrat had fellow Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine stump on his behalf.

"We don't have any doubts that we're going to get Mark re-elected, right?" The junior senator asks the crowd.

The former Virginia governor has held his senate seat since 2009.

Polls have Warner ahead of his republican opponent Gillespie by 19 points.
