The #CruztoVictory hashtag was a big success on Twitter Wednesday night, trending nationally after prominent conservatives such as Erick Erickson asked fellow conservatives to tweet support for Sen. Ted Cruz as he spoke at a Republican fundraiser in New York City.

The hashtag was created as a response to a grassroots gun control group protest hashtag #youcruzyoulose.

At the peak of its popularity, the hashtag trended No. 2 worldwide and No. 1 in the U.S., according to David Sawyer, Cruz’s regional director.

Cruz later thanked his supporters on Twitter.

“Noticing quite a few fellow #Wackobirds tweeting tonight! Proud to stand with you as we #CruztoVictory for liberty!” Cruz wrote.

Josh Perry, Cruz’s new media director, tweeted out a “Most Interesting Man in the World” meme to celebrate the victory.

“Liberty is popular. Stand with @SenTedCruz as we #CruztoVictory,” he wrote.
