President Trump on Thursday thanked the "brave, incredible" U.S. troops serving around the world this Thanksgiving, and said they are a critical difference in the fight against terrorism.

"We totally support you. In fact, we love you," Trump said from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Thursday morning. "We really do, we love you."

Trump praised the work that the U.S. Army is doing in Afghanistan, and said U.S. is making progress since the end of the Obama administration.

"Everybody's talking about the progress you've made in the last few months since I opened it up," he said. "We opened it up to go ahead, we're gonna fight to win. We're not fighting anymore to just walk around, we're fighting to win."

On Thursday morning, another top military officer said there is "optimism" in Afghanistan since the Trump administration set a "conditions-based" mission there, instead of a "time-based" mission.

Trump praised representatives of the Marine Corps, and said they are doing a better job containing the Islamic State.

"We're really winning, we know how to win," he said. "But we have to let you win, they weren't letting you win before. They were letting you play even. We're letting you win."
