Something is amiss in the race to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate.

First, Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa, used a "chick" in a campaign ad against his female opponent, Republican Joni Ernst.

And now Ernst has had to apologize for sexist remarks her husband made in 2013.

Gail Ernst called Hillary Clinton a "hag" and former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano a "traitorous skank," on Facebook last year. He also posted a crude joke.

"What do you do if you see your ex running around in your front yard screaming and bloody? Stay calm. Reload. And try again," Gail wrote.

The posts came to light Tuesday when Democratic operatives – who had taken screenshots of the posts – sent them to the Des Moines Register. The posts have since been deleted.

"I'm appalled by my husband's remarks," Joni said in a statement to the Register. "They are uncalled-for and clearly inappropriate. I've addressed this issue with my husband and that's between us."

Both of these candidates need to get it together.
