President Trump has "full confidence" in Secretary of State Rex Tillerson despite joking about his intelligence earlier this week, according to a senior White House official.

"[Trump] certainly never implied that the secretary of state was not incredibly intelligent," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters on Tuesday.

In response to recent reports that Tillerson called him a "moron" earlier this year, Trump claimed in an interview with Forbes that he would outperform his secretary of state on an IQ test.

"He made a joke, nothing more than that," Sanders said. "He has full confidence in the secretary of state. They had a great visit earlier today and they're working hand-in-hand to move the president's agenda forward."

Trump met with Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis earlier Tuesday, marking the first time he and Tillerson have spoken in-person since reports of their increasingly tense relationship emerged.
