Republican chairman tells Trump to tone it down

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday that his party a more inclusive message to win, in an evident shot a GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

The general election “is a little bit diferent and the message has to be very broadly based,” Priebus said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “Our party is the party of the open door and the only way we’re gonna win is by adding people.”

“We’re operating in a pretty confined space,” he said.

Asked how the party of the open door works with Trump’s call for a masssive wall on the border with Mexico, Priebus argued Americans want a more secure border.

“Candidates have to watch their mouth and watch their tone and tenor,” Priebus said later. He said he was pleased Trump retracted his asseration that women who have abortions should be penalized.

Preibus avoided mentioning Trump by name, but conceded he has talked to all GOP presidential candidates.

“It’s been in some cases pretty well documented that I have,” he said.
